Intelligence and Twice-Exceptionality (2e) Testing in Naperville

Because strengths and struggles can coexist.

Some kids soar academically but collapse under pressure. Others solve complex problems but struggle to follow simple instructions. Still others toggle between brilliance and burnout, leaving parents, educators, and even the students themselves confused.

This is the world of twice-exceptionality (2e), where giftedness coexists with a learning difference, ADHD, autism, or other challenges. At Tailwinds, we use intelligence testing and comprehensive evaluation to understand the full picture of a person’s cognitive strengths and support needs.

Whether you’re seeking documentation for a gifted program, clarity about your child’s complex profile, or a roadmap to help them thrive, we’re here to help.

What Is Twice-Exceptionality?

Twice-exceptionality describes individuals who are both gifted (possessing high intellectual ability or potential) and neurodivergent (living with a learning disability, ADHD, autism, or other difference). These kids — and adults — often have unique cognitive profiles that don’t fit neatly into educational or clinical boxes.

2e individuals may:

Excel in certain areas while struggling in others

Seem bored, inattentive, or disruptive in class

Mask their struggles with creativity or humor

Get labeled as lazy or oppositional

Experience emotional intensity or perfectionism

Have their strengths overlooked because of their challenges, or vice versa

Without a comprehensive evaluation, many 2e students are misunderstood, under-supported, or neglected entirely.

What Does Intelligence Testing Measure?

Intelligence (IQ) testing is a structured way to assess core areas of thinking and reasoning. At Tailwinds, we use gold-standard tools like the Wechsler family of intelligence tests to assess:

These scores can offer insight into giftedness, learning styles, and asynchronous development (where certain abilities are far ahead or behind others).

We interpret results with nuance and always explain what the numbers mean — and don’t mean — for daily life.

When to Consider 2e or IQ Testing

What’s the Process?

We tailor each evaluation to the client’s needs and the referral question. Here’s what to expect:

Step 1

Intake Session

We start with a clinical interview to understand your concerns, questions, and goals. For child clients, we speak with caregivers and often request teacher input.

Step 2

Testing Sessions

We administer standardized IQ assessments along with optional academic, neuropsychological, or emotional testing to clarify 2e status. Most sessions occur over 1–2 appointments.

Step 3

Scoring and Interpretation

We analyze not only overall IQ scores, but also subtest patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and variability across domains.

Step 4

Feedback Session

You’ll receive clear, strength-based language to describe your child’s learning profile, including areas of support and enrichment.

Step 5

Final Report

We provide a comprehensive report that includes test results, diagnostic impressions (if applicable), and recommendations for school, enrichment, or therapeutic support.
