At Tailwinds, we believe that true mental wellness often requires an integrated approach. While therapy helps clients explore, heal, and grow, psychiatry can play an important role in restoring balance through careful use of medication when appropriate.
Tailwinds psychiatrists emphasize measured, responsible care. Our psychiatric providers spend time getting to know clients and their histories before making recommendations. Medications are prescribed conservatively, adjusted with care, and monitored over time. Our goal is always long-term well-being. That means our clients are never reduced to a diagnosis or a prescription.
Tailwinds psychiatry providers take a thoughtful and collaborative approach to medication. Here are some of the main classes of psychiatric medication we may use as part of treatment:
Often the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety, helping improve mood by increasing serotonin levels.
Similar to SSRIs, but also affect norepinephrine to support both mood and energy regulation.
A diverse group of medications that work in different ways when standard antidepressants aren’t the best fit.
Help steady the highs and lows of mood swings, often used in treating bipolar disorder.
Provide short-term relief from acute anxiety, panic, or insomnia, used cautiously and with close monitoring.
Improve focus, attention, and impulse control, most commonly prescribed for ADHD.
Reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and severe mood changes, and can be used in a range of conditions beyond psychosis.
Medication Evaluation and Management: Thoughtful assessments and ongoing monitoring to determine if medication may help with symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, or other mental health conditions.
Collaboration with our Therapy and Testing Teams: Our psychiatric providers work closely with Tailwinds therapy and testing clinicians to align treatment plans, ensuring medication decisions support each client’s broader therapeutic goals.
A Holistic Approach to Care: Medications are never viewed as a “quick fix.” Instead, they are one tool among many, tailored to each client’s unique needs and used alongside therapy, evaluation, and lifestyle changes.

Here’s how the psychiatry process works at Tailwinds:
Considering psychiatry services can bring up a lot of questions. We’ve gathered answers to some of the most common ones here, so you know what to expect before you even schedule an appointment.
No. Meeting with a psychiatric provider doesn’t mean you’re required to take medication. Many clients simply want to explore their options or get a professional opinion about their concerns.
That’s perfectly fine. If you’re happy with your current psychiatrist, you can continue seeing them. If you’d like, we’re glad to collaborate with outside providers to ensure your care is consistent and well-coordinated.
Yes, though we often recommend combining the two. Research shows that therapy and psychiatry together tend to produce the best long-term outcomes.
Our providers collaborate as a team. This means your testing psychologist, therapist, and psychiatric provider can align treatment plans, share relevant updates (with your permission), and make sure your care feels seamless.
It depends on your needs. After the initial intake, many clients return in 2–4 weeks for a follow-up, then monthly or less often once treatment stabilizes.
Not necessarily. Some clients benefit from short-term support, while others find longer-term treatment more effective. Medication use is always individualized and revisited over time.
Yes, when clinically appropriate. These prescriptions follow strict monitoring guidelines and require regular follow-up visits.
Our providers work with clients managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more. Psychiatry can also be useful for clients struggling with symptoms that therapy alone hasn’t resolved.
No. Medication is one option among many. Our providers emphasize a holistic approach that includes evaluation, therapy, and lifestyle changes alongside medication when helpful.
Medication is always a process of careful testing and adjustment. If one medication isn’t effective, your provider will work with you to explore alternatives until you find the right fit.
Your first step is to schedule a psychiatric intake. During this appointment, we’ll review your medical history, current symptoms, and treatment goals before making any recommendations.
Yes. With your consent, we’re glad to communicate with your primary care provider or other specialists so that your care remains coordinated.
We’re in-network with most major insurers. As with therapy and testing, coverage depends on your plan. You can use our Cost Estimator Tool to check your out-of-pocket responsibility for the intake appointment. We also provide benefits checking and reimbursement support through Mentaya to help out-of-network clients afford their care.
Yes. Many of our psychiatric appointments are available via secure video visits, making it easier to fit care into your schedule.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, we ask you to notify us at least 2 business days (i.e., Monday-Friday) in advance. Psychiatry cancellations made less than 2 business days in advance, or no-shows, will incur a cancellation fee equal to the full self-pay cost of the missed session. Missed appointment or late cancellation fees cannot be billed to insurance, and are the sole responsibility of the client. This policy respects the time of our psychiatric experts and other clients seeking care.
Psychiatry at Tailwinds is about partnership. Whether you’re considering medication for the first time or looking to revisit a treatment plan, our providers are here to listen, guide, and support rather than pressure you into any one path.
Your first step is a psychiatric intake appointment, where we’ll learn about your concerns, medical and psychological history, and treatment goals. From there, we’ll work with you to determine if medication is the right option and, if so, how it fits into your broader care plan.
