Parenting is demanding. Parenting while managing your own ADHD, autism, sensory needs, anxiety, overwhelm, or executive-functioning challenges can add another layer entirely.
You may spend much of your time helping your child regulate, stay organized, navigate school, manage emotions, or cope with a world that does not always fit the way their brain works, all while trying to manage many of the same challenges yourself.
Different Minds, Shared Roots is a therapy group for neurodivergent parents raising neurodivergent children. The group offers a supportive, neuroaffirming space to better understand your own patterns, reduce parenting burnout, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop practical strategies that support both you and your family.
Most of our therapy services are available through secure video sessions, including:
Individual therapy for adults, teens, and children (depending on age and developmental needs)
Couples counseling and parent consultation
Group therapy
Some components of psychological and neuropsychological assessments (such as intakes, interviews, and feedback sessions)
Note: For younger children or more complex evaluations, we may recommend a hybrid or in-person model to ensure quality of care.
Planned start: Early 2027
Length: 12 weeks
Frequency: Weekly
Session length: Approximately 55–60 minutes
Format: Hybrid—participate in-person at Tailwinds Psychology or via telehealth
Group size: Up to 6 participants
Age: Parents age 21+
Many neurodivergent parents are asked to provide enormous amounts of structure, patience, flexibility, and emotional regulation for their children.
That can be especially difficult when the parent is also managing:
Their own sensory overload
Difficulty shifting attention
Executive-functioning demands
Emotional intensity
Fatigue or depleted capacity
Anxiety about whether they are “doing enough”
Memories of being misunderstood themselves as children
Pressure to parent in ways that do not fit their own needs or values
A neuroaffirming group provides space to talk about those experiences without treating neurodivergence itself as something that needs to be fixed.
Instead, we focus on understanding patterns, identifying needs, building workable supports, and finding ways to parent that are sustainable for both parent and child.
Most of our therapy services are available through secure video sessions, including:

Different Minds, Shared Roots is designed for parents age 21 and older who identify as neurodivergent and are raising a neurodivergent child.
The group may be a good fit for parents navigating:
Parents may participate while also receiving individual therapy, psychiatric care, or other mental-health services.
Different Minds, Shared Roots combines psychotherapy with practical strategies drawn from approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT, and parent-training models.
Topics may include:
Understanding overload. Learn to recognize early signs of activation, shutdown, depletion, or sensory overload before you reach your limit.
Emotional regulation. Develop practical responses for moments when stress is rising and it becomes harder to think clearly, stay flexible, or respond the way you would like.
Parenting burnout. Identify the patterns, demands, and expectations that are draining your capacity and explore realistic ways to reduce unnecessary strain.
Anxiety and uncertainty. Learn to distinguish between problems you can act on, predictions your mind is generating, and needs that may require additional support or accommodation.
Shame and self-criticism. Examine the internal messages that can develop from years of feeling different, struggling with tasks others seem to manage easily, or worrying that you are falling short as a parent.
Values-based parenting. Clarify what matters most to you as a parent and practice taking meaningful action even when anxiety, guilt, or uncertainty are present.
Supporting your child without losing yourself. Explore how to respond to your child’s needs while also recognizing and respecting your own.
Later sessions will continue building on these themes with additional attention to parenting patterns, communication, self-compassion, executive functioning, and sustainable family routines.
Different Minds, Shared Roots includes practical parenting strategies, but it is primarily a therapy group for parents. That means the focus is not simply on teaching you how to manage your child’s behavior. We also pay attention to your own emotional experience, stress level, beliefs, coping patterns, relationships, and needs. The goal is not to create a “perfect” parenting system. It is to help you understand yourself more clearly and develop strategies that are realistic for your brain, your child, and your family.
No. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly organized household, a complete understanding of your own neurodivergence, or a list of parenting goals. Many participants may join precisely because they feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or unsure where to begin. The group is designed to help identify the problems that are creating the greatest strain and begin working on them one step at a time.
Before joining Different Minds, Shared Roots, prospective members will complete a brief screening process with the group leader. The screening is an opportunity to discuss what you hope to gain from the group, your own neurodivergence and current concerns, your child’s needs and diagnoses, parenting stressors or areas of burnout, current mental-health symptoms, accessibility or participation needs, whether in-person or virtual participation is likely to work best for you, and whether the group is likely to be an appropriate clinical fit. Prospective members who are not already receiving services at Tailwinds may also complete a brief individual intake before enrolling.
Because this is an outpatient therapy group, individuals experiencing an acute mental-health crisis or symptoms requiring a higher level of care may be better served by another treatment option.
Neurodivergent parents often spend tremendous energy understanding their children’s needs. Your needs matter, too.
Different Minds, Shared Roots offers a place to better understand your own patterns, reduce burnout, learn from other parents with similar experiences, and build a way of parenting that supports both your child and yourself.
