Feelings in Motion: Intuitive Art for Anxiety

An art therapy group for adults who want a different way to understand, express, and respond to anxiety.

Anxiety does not always arrive in words. Sometimes it shows up as tension in your shoulders. A racing mind. Restlessness. A feeling you cannot quite name. Or the sense that you understand what you are feeling intellectually, but still have trouble moving through it.

Feelings in Motion is an adult therapy group that combines psychotherapy with intuitive art, music, movement, visualization, and reflection. The goal is to give you new ways to notice emotions, express what may be difficult to put into words, and develop more flexible ways of responding to anxiety.

No artistic ability or experience is required.

What Is an Intuitive Art Therapy Group?

In this group, art is not about artistic skill, technique, or producing a finished product. Instead, participants use simple materials, music, movement, and guided exercises to explore emotional and physical experiences in the moment. You might experiment with color, lines, movement, pressure, pace, or imagery while paying attention to what you notice in your body and emotions. The emphasis is on curiosity rather than performance. There is no “right” way for your artwork to look, and you will never be asked to defend what you create.

Who Is Feelings in Motion For?

Feelings in Motion is designed for adults 18 and older who experience concerns such as:

You do not need to consider yourself creative. You do not need experience with painting, drawing, movement, or other forms of artistic expression. You simply need a willingness to experiment.

What Will We Do in the Group?

Each meeting will generally include a brief check-in, an experiential activity, optional reflection, and a grounding check-out.

Activities may incorporate:

Music and emotion. Notice how different music affects your emotions, physical sensations, energy, and attention.

Intuitive mark-making. Experiment with color, line, pressure, shape, and movement without worrying about what the finished image is “supposed” to represent.

Body awareness and movement. Explore optional seated or standing movements and consider how physical sensations can be translated onto paper.

Visualization. Use guided imagery to notice emotional experiences and experiment with new ways of responding to them.

Grounding and regulation. Identify expressive activities that help you slow down, reconnect with your body, tolerate difficult emotions, and respond more intentionally.

Participation is flexible. Movement and sharing are optional, and activities can be adapted for sensory, mobility, or comfort needs.

What Will We Explore?

Across the six-week group, themes will include:

You do not need to consider yourself creative. You do not need experience with painting, drawing, movement, or other forms of artistic expression. You simply need a willingness to experiment.

Do I Have to Talk About My Artwork?

No. Feelings in Motion is designed around choice rather than forced disclosure. Participants may reflect on their experience when doing so feels useful, but you will not be required to explain your artwork or reveal personal information simply because you created something during an exercise.

The group leader will also not attempt to “decode” or interpret your artwork for you. Your experience—and what your work means or does not mean to you—belongs to you.

What If I Feel Uncomfortable With Movement or Certain Sensory Experiences?

Activities can be adapted. Participants may choose seated rather than standing movement, reduce the intensity of an activity, use quieter alternatives, pause when needed, or pass on a particular exercise. Our goal is to create an environment in which experimentation feels possible without making participation feel forced.

How Do I Join?

Before joining the group, prospective members will complete a brief individual screening with the group leader. The screening typically takes approximately 15-20 minutes and gives you an opportunity to discuss what you hope to get from the group, your current emotional concerns, any accessibility needs, and any questions or concerns you have before participating.

The screening also helps us make sure that group treatment is an appropriate level of care for your current needs. People experiencing an immediate mental-health crisis or symptoms requiring a higher level of care may be better served by a different treatment option.

Sometimes talking is exactly what we need. And sometimes another way of expressing what is happening inside us can help us notice something that words have not quite captured.

You don’t have to be an artist to make something meaningful. Feelings in Motion offers a supportive place to experiment with those possibilities without pressure to perform, produce, or create something “good.” Just notice, explore, and see what moves.
