At Tailwinds Psychology, we provide comprehensive, high-quality psychological and neuropsychological testing, with results delivered in days, not months. Whether you’re seeking testing for ADHD, autism, learning differences, trauma, or other mental health concerns, our evaluations are designed to remove roadblocks and help you move forward.
Faster results mean faster access to academic accommodations, workplace support, or surgical care. We assess children, adolescents, and adults, and tailor every evaluation to meet each person’s needs.
We know long delays can make an already stressful situation worse. That’s why we provide prompt scheduling and deliver most psychological and neuropsychological testing results within one week of testing administration, helping you access supports like IEPs, 504 Plans, workplace accommodations, or surgery clearance without unnecessary waiting.
We don’t just test; we listen. Our psychological and neuropsychological testing process includes input from you, your providers, and (when appropriate) teachers or family members to ensure a full, accurate understanding of your concerns and goals.
You’ll receive a comprehensive, plain-language report, diagnostic impressions (if appropriate), and personalized recommendations that translate directly to school, work, therapy, or medical planning.
We offer evaluations for a range of concerns, including:
ADHD and executive functioning difficulties
Autism spectrum concerns
Learning disabilities and academic struggles
Giftedness and twice-exceptionality (2e)
Emotional and behavioral concerns
Anxiety, depression, and mood-related challenges
Histories of trauma
Academic accommodations and support
Presurgical evaluations for bariatric and pain management procedures
Our evaluations help you take meaningful next steps, whether that means classroom accommodations, therapy, medication, or surgical planning.
We understand the importance of coordinated care. Our reports are written to meet the practical needs of educators, employers, therapists, and medical providers. We also conduct presurgical evaluations for bariatric and pain management procedures and provide timely documentation to help you move forward without delay.
We believe psychological and neuropsychological testing should leave you feeling clearer, not overwhelmed. That’s why our process is responsive, transparent, and centered around real-world concerns, not just test scores.
Our evaluations go beyond diagnoses to reveal your unique cognitive and emotional profile. Our strengths-based approach and comprehensive testing reports ensure you receive a full breakdown of your/your child’s individual mental landscape.
At Tailwinds Psychology, our clients are at the heart of everything we do. Whether you’re taking your first step toward therapy, seeking testing for clarity, or need medication support, we’re here to make the process feel easy, human, and hopeful.
We understand that mental health doesn’t exist in isolation — it touches children, teens, adults, parents, and couples alike. That’s why our care is designed for the whole crew, not just the individual.
From compassionate clinicians to clear communication and actionable reports, we’re redefining what thoughtful, respectful care looks like. Our goal is simple: to help you feel better, think clearer, and live fuller.
We understand that the testing process can be confusing, especially if it’s your first time seeking an evaluation. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about psychological, neuropsychological, and educational testing at Tailwinds.
Psychological and neuropsychological testing involve structured assessments designed to understand how someone thinks, learns, feels, and functions. These tests go beyond conversation to objectively measure things like memory, attention, mood, reasoning, and academic skills. The goal is to clarify what’s going on and what will help.
All testing at Tailwinds is conducted or directly supervised by licensed psychologists with expertise in assessment. You’ll work with professionals who apply diagnostics, cognitive testing, learning evaluations, and emotional-behavioral profiles to make sense of what it all means for your life.
Testing can help diagnose and clarify concerns such as:
– ADHD and executive functioning challenges
– Learning disorders like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia
– Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
– Anxiety, depression, and mood disorders
– Trauma-related symptoms
– Behavioral and emotional regulation difficulties
– Personality patterns that impact relationships or functioning
– Readiness for surgery or medical treatment (e.g., bariatric surgery, spinal cord stimulators)
– Accommodations for school or standardized tests
Both 504 Plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are tools schools use to support students with learning, emotional, or medical needs, but they serve slightly different purposes and are based on different laws.
– Based on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (a civil rights law)
– Designed to ensure equal access to learning for students with a disability that impacts a major life function (like learning, reading, concentrating, or behavior)
– Provides accommodations (e.g., extended time, preferential seating, breaks, etc.)
– Does not typically include specialized instruction or curriculum modifications
– Often easier to qualify for and can apply to a wider range of needs
– Based on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
– Designed for students who meet criteria for specific educational disabilities (e.g., specific learning disorder, autism, ADHD, emotional disturbance)
– Provides special education services, goals, and individualized instruction
– Includes accommodations and educational interventions or modifications
– Requires more formal eligibility determination and review by a school team
Tailwinds evaluations are designed to provide the kind of detailed diagnostic and academic information that schools can use to determine eligibility for either option. We’re also happy to consult with you and your school team to ensure the testing is useful and actionable.
Most evaluations take between 1–2 weeks from intake to final report, depending on your availability and responsiveness to the process (e.g., completing questionnaires in a timely manner). You’ll typically attend:
– An intake session
– 1–2 testing sessions, depending on the referral question
– A feedback session to review results and a comprehensive written report
We prioritize efficient scheduling and quick turnaround without compromising quality.
Only if it’s clinically appropriate. We use testing to clarify symptoms, not just to assign labels. If a diagnosis is present and relevant (e.g., ADHD, ASD, specific learning disorder), we’ll explain it in plain language and discuss next steps. To uphold the integrity of the evaluation process, we only diagnose clients based on the data collected during an assessment and do not guarantee diagnoses prior to testing.
Some evaluations may confirm that no diagnosis is present, which can also be empowering and informative.
Every evaluation comes with a detailed, reader-friendly report that includes:
– A summary of concerns and background
– Test results and interpretation
– Diagnoses (if applicable)
– Personalized recommendations for school, work, therapy, or medical care
– Documentation suitable for IEPs, 504 Plans, standardized test accommodations, or presurgical clearance
Often, yes — especially when testing is used to diagnose or rule out a clinical condition. Coverage depends on your individual plan and the reason for the referral. We are in-network with several major insurers and provide good-faith estimates before testing begins. For self-pay clients, we also partner with Mentaya to make out-of-network reimbursement easy.
We offer educational and cognitive assessments for giftedness, learning differences, and testing accommodations (e.g., ACT, SAT, MCAT, LSAT). These are sometimes not covered by insurance, but we’ll walk you through your options. Regardless of insurance coverage, you’ll always receive a high-quality evaluation and a usable report.
We’re happy to (with your written permission)! We regularly collaborate with referring therapists, pediatricians, schools, and other care providers to ensure continuity and support. Your information is kept private and secure unless you tell us otherwise.
I believe my child has Autism/ADHD/anxiety/a learning disability. Will testing confirm this for us?
At Tailwinds, we are dedicated to serving members of our community seeking clarity on suspected neuro/psychological disorders that may affect their child’s quality of life. We absolutely value and integrate background information and case history into every report. This being said, we have a clinical responsibility to minimize bias in the course of interpreting the results of any evaluation and cannot guarantee ahead of testing that a child will or will not meet criteria for any specific diagnosis.
Do you test for sensory/auditory processing disorder?
Sensory/auditory processing disorders have increasingly entered popular awareness over the last few years. It is important to understand that these disorders are currently subjects of intense debate and controversy in the healthcare community and have not been formally recognized as diagnoses in either the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Because these disorders have not been formally assigned diagnoses, we cannot diagnose clients with either sensory or auditory processing disorder as a result of an evaluation.
It is important to note that sensory issues may be involved in the pathopsychological profile of various diagnoses, including ADHD, Autism, depression, and anxiety. Testing can provide clarity on whether or not your child meets criteria for such conditions and the extent to which sensory issues play a role in their mental health.
Can I remain in the testing room while my child is being tested?
Clinical best practices hold that parents/guardians should not be present during testing administration. However, for children younger than 5, children with severe mental impairment (e.g., profound Autism or Intellectual Disability), or for those who have substantial separation anxiety, it may be permissible to allow parents to remain in the testing room, though interaction with the child will need to be limited to ensure an accurate evaluation (i.e., parents cannot help or encourage children with answers to any tests/tasks).
In rare cases, certain tests require parents to be present and participate in the administration of the test in a limited fashion. Your clinician will inform you if your participation in the evaluation may be necessary prior to testing.
Do both parents/guardians need to attend testing on testing day?
It is not required for both parents to be present with a child on the day of an evaluation. In cases where one parent or guardian brings a child to testing, it may be necessary to send one or more assessment measures home to be completed by the other parent.
On testing day, can I drop my child off at Tailwinds for testing and pick them when the evaluation is over?
Certainly! We recognize that testing is a major time commitment for most families. In order to make things easier, please feel free to drop off your child for testing and return to pick them up at the conclusion of the evaluation. If you elect to drop off your child, your clinician will have your child contact you (if they have a cell phone) or will contact you directly when the day’s testing session is about to conclude.
What should I tell my child to prepare them for testing/put them at ease?
Many children struggle with test anxiety or worry that any “test” could reflect badly on them or have implications for school or discipline at home. When discussing an evaluation with your child, we recommend avoiding the word “test” if possible, informing them that there are no grades, and emphasizing that the only goal they should have in mind is to do their best. If they ask what the purpose of their evaluation is, parents/guardians are encouraged to use age-appropriate language to communicate that their evaluation is meant to make things easier for them at school and at home and to find ways to better support them.
Can my child bring a snack on testing day?
Absolutely! Please feel free to bring a small snack (e.g., chips, crackers, cookies, fruits, veggies) for your child to enjoy at any time during testing.
Will there be opportunities for breaks during testing if my child needs them?
Of course! If a younger client needs a break during testing, they simply need to let their psychologist know. In some cases, breaks may not be possible immediately (e.g., during the administration of certain timed tasks), but opportunities for breaks during testing are usually available at intervals of 20 minutes or less.
What’s Your Testing No-Show or Cancellation Policy?
Due to the time-intensive and highly specialized nature of testing services, missed testing intakes or feedback sessions, or testing intakes or feedback sessions cancelled less than 2 business days (i.e., Monday-Friday) in advance, are charged the full self-pay cost of the missed session. Missed testing administration sessions or testing administration sessions cancelled less than 2 business days in advance are charged a fee of $250 for every scheduled hour. Missed appointment or late cancellation fees cannot be billed to insurance, and are the sole responsibility of the client. This policy respects the time of our clinicians and other clients seeking care.
We’re here to walk you through it. You can always contact us directly. You can also learn more about our specific types of evaluations below.
