School shouldn’t feel like a daily battle — for students or their families. But when a learner is struggling, misunderstood, or under-supported, school can become a source of anxiety, frustration, or self-doubt. Psychoeducational testing helps clarify what’s going on and how to help.
At Tailwinds, we offer comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations for children, teens, and college students. Our goal is to pinpoint each student’s strengths and challenges — academically, cognitively, and emotionally — so that families and educators can create meaningful, customized support plans.
Psychoeducational testing is a broad, integrated evaluation of how a student thinks, learns, and functions in an academic setting. It typically includes:
Cognitive testing (e.g., IQ testing)
Academic achievement testing (reading, writing, math, comprehension)
Executive functioning and processing speed assessments
Attention, focus, and memory measures
Emotional and behavioral screenings, if relevant
The goal is to identify learning differences, giftedness, ADHD, or other cognitive-emotional profiles that may affect a student’s performance and experience in school.
Our evaluations also consider environmental, developmental, and emotional factors that may contribute to academic challenges, because performance is never just about ability.
A psychoeducational evaluation may be appropriate when a student:
We work with elementary through college-aged students, and our reports are designed to help educators and families make informed, supportive decisions.
Psychoeducational testing focuses on academic skills, cognitive functioning, and school-related support needs. It’s often used to determine eligibility for services, accommodations, or placement decisions.
By comparison, neuropsychological testing digs deeper into brain-behavior relationships and may be better suited when there are concerns about neurological conditions, medical history (e.g., concussion, seizure, developmental delay), or complex emotional-behavioral profiles.
That said, there’s often overlap, and at Tailwinds we tailor each evaluation to the individual, not just the category.
Here’s what to expect from our psychoeducational evaluations:
We meet with the student and caregivers to review academic concerns, developmental history, and educational goals. We may request teacher input or academic records.
The student completes a personalized battery of assessments with a psychologist. These sessions typically take place over 1–2 days, depending on age and stamina.
We analyze academic, cognitive, and (if included) emotional measures to create a clear picture of strengths, barriers, and learning style.
Families meet with the psychologist to review results, diagnoses (if applicable), and recommendations in plain language.
We provide a written report designed to be useful in educational planning. It includes test results, individualized strategies, and — when relevant — documentation for accommodations (e.g., IEPs, 504s, extended time).
